Set on a wooded peninsula overlooking Lake Como, Villa del Balbianello is one of the most recognisable and sought-after wedding venues in Italy.

Known for its terraced gardens, historic architecture and sweeping views across the lake, the villa offers a setting that feels both dramatic and intimate — where each part of the day unfolds against a carefully framed landscape.

About Villa del Balbianello

Originating first as a monestary in the 13th century, the two towers are remnants of the monestarty’s church. Villa del Balbianello originally built in the 18th century, where Cont Guido Monzini where the last resident, is not open for events. The Villa with its layered gardens sits at the edge of the lake, accessible primarily by boat. This arrival alone shapes the experience, creating a sense of anticipation for both the couple and their guests.

The villa is known for its layered gardens and iconic loggia, Loggia Durini, where ceremonies often take place overlooking the water in both directions. The surrounding greenery and the way the light moves through the space give the setting a softness that balances its architectural presence.

The Ceremony at the Loggia

One of the defining features of a wedding at Villa del Balbianello is the ceremony at the loggia. Framed by columns and climbing greenery, the space opens onto uninterrupted views of the lake, creating a natural backdrop that changes with the light throughout the day.

The ceremony here tends to feel both structured and relaxed — formal in its setting, yet softened by the landscape and the quiet movement of the water below.

The Flow of the Day

Weddings at Villa del Balbianello often unfold gradually, moving between different areas of the property.

Preparations may take place nearby, followed by a boat arrival at the villa. After the ceremony, guests typically gather within the gardens for aperitivo, before transitioning into dinner within the grounds. The secluded Loggia Segré, on the upper level, with both indoor and outdoor spaces is used for wedding receptions.

This natural progression allows the day to feel both considered and unhurried, with space for moments to unfold rather than being tightly scheduled.

Light and Timing

Light plays an important role in shaping the atmosphere at Villa del Balbianello. Mornings tend to be soft and quiet, while the late afternoon brings a warmer, more directional light across the lake.

Many couples choose to plan portraits during the later afternoon, allowing the changing light to enhance the setting and create a more relaxed moment within the day.

Documenting weddings in a way that reflects both the setting and the atmosphere of the day is something I care deeply about. You can see more examples of my work in my portfolio.

Why Couples Choose Villa del Balbianello

For many, Villa del Balbianello represents the essence of a Lake Como wedding — a place where the setting itself becomes part of the experience.

The combination of history, landscape and the sense of arrival creates a wedding that feels both memorable and personal, shaped as much by the surroundings as by the celebration itself. Hosting the wedding reception in Loggia Segré is also a strong reason, being able to be both outdoor and indoor.

Planning Considerations

Planning a wedding at Villa del Balbianello involves working with the unique logistics of the location, including boat access and timing within the grounds. Weddings usually take place between mid-April til October. Mondays and Wednesdays, the Villa is closed to the public, making it ideal for weddings. On other days the Villa is open between ten am to six pm. From six o’clock the Villa and its garden closes for public and you will have exclusivity to the peninsula no matter the day.

Taking the time to consider how each part of the day connects — rather than focusing only on individual moments — often results in a more seamless and relaxed experience.

Villa del Balbianello offers a setting that feels both iconic and personal, where the landscape and architecture come together to shape the atmosphere of the day.
