How to plan a wedding on Lake Como, one of the most sought-after destinations for weddings in Europe, known for its historic villas, lake views and timeless atmosphere. Planning a wedding here offers the opportunity to create a celebration that feels both intimate and expansive, shaped by the surrounding landscape.
For couples traveling from abroad, the process can feel unfamiliar at first, but with the right approach it becomes a natural and enjoyable part of the experience.

Choose the right venue
One of the first steps when planning a wedding on Lake Como is choosing the venue. The villas around the lake each offer a different atmosphere, from garden settings that extend to the water to more architectural and formal spaces.
Venues such as Villa Pizzo, Villa del Balbianello and Villa Balbiano are among the most well-known, each offering a distinct setting for ceremonies and celebrations. You can get exclusivity to the venue for a full weekend.

Planning the timeline
Weddings on Lake Como often unfold across several moments, rather than a single day. Many couples choose to begin with a welcome dinner, followed by the wedding day itself and, in some cases, a relaxed gathering or poolparty the day after.
The pace of the day is often slower and more considered, allowing time to move between the ceremony, portraits and reception while taking in the surroundings.
Villa La Cassinella is a private villa, only accessible by boat that can be exclusively rent for the wedding weekend.

Planning a civil, religious or symbolic wedding ceremony on Lake Como
As a foreigner, you can get married in Italy regardless of nationality or residence status.
A civil ceremony can be conducted at the local town hall by a major or civil registrar. A religious/catholic ceremony is also legally recognized and called a concordat wedding. The civil and the religious ceremonies, legal unions, require paperwork from your home country. A Nulla Osta, a sworn declaration certifying there are no legal impediments to the marriage must be presented. For example US, Australian and Canadian citizens also need to obtain a Atto Notorio, a sworn declaration from an Italian consulate in their home country. Documents, such as birth certificates or divorce decrees, often require apostilles (authentication) and professional translations into Italian. A civil registry, a declaration of intent to marry, must be filed with the local town hall (Comune). Further a valid, current passport is required.
You can also choose to have a legally binding ceremony in your home country and conduct a symbolic, non-legal, ceremony in Italy.
It is highly recommended to start the paperwork 6-12 months in advance for the civil or religious ceremonies since the process for foreign citizens can be complex.
Guest experience
For destination weddings, the experience for guests becomes an important part of the celebration. Travel, accommodation and the overall flow of the days all contribute to how the wedding is remembered.
Lake Como offers a setting where guests can enjoy both the wedding itself and the location, creating a shared experience beyond the ceremony. By land or boat, you can reach many picturesque villages, all with their unique charm and you can bring your guests village-hopping. If you choose any of the venues mentioned above; Villa Pizzo, Villa del Balbianello or Villa Balbiano, on the western shore, you have easy and close boat access to villages such as Tremezzina or Bellagio to take your guests experiencing the local restaurants and boutiques.

Photography on Lake Como
The landscape of Lake Como plays a significant role in how a wedding is photographed. The light, water and surrounding mountains create a natural backdrop that evolves throughout the day.
From quiet moments by the lake to portraits in the gardens and evening celebrations, the setting allows for a photography approach that feels both natural and intentional, creating a great variety.

Best time of the year
The main wedding season on Lake Como typically runs from late spring through early autumn, when the weather allows for outdoor ceremonies and receptions. Check the venues you have in mind since some closes from early November to mid-late March. Others are open year around and during the slower months you experience a more quiet Lake Como.
Each season brings its own atmosphere, from the softer light of spring to the warmer evenings of summer and early autumn. The warmth is usually still felt in the air in late October.

Planning a wedding on Lake Como offers the opportunity to create a celebration that is closely connected to its surroundings. With the right venue and a considered approach to the experience, the day becomes a natural extension of the place itself.
